Tandem Restaurant is a ‘dream come true’ for Co-Owners Chef Younes Sabouh and GM Emma Dunbar.  After working together for the past 4 years they decided to take the plunge and open their own space in Carrboro where they live and raise their family.

The core focus of Tandem is to offer great food in a warm relaxing environment – a place in the community where people come to relax, unwind and have fun. The name Tandem reflects the closeness of their working and personal relationship.  Tandem has been a life long dream for the couple, a dream that has come true in 2016, a dream that they want to share with everyone.

Chef Younes Sabouh

Chef Younes has deep culinary roots from his mother and his childhood growing up in Morocco where he learnt the traditional style of cooking using techniques like braising, cooking in clay, over fires.  Following the bulk of his culinary training  – throughout numerous regions in France – working under esteemed chefs, he was offered the role as the exclusive private chef for the Hermes Family, where he travelled the world and was exposed to a multitude of culinary scenes.  This led him eventually to America and NC, where he worked for the high class establishments the Washington Duke and the Umstead Hotels before moving on to transform City Kitchen restaurant in Chapel Hill for the past 4 years.

Emma Dunbar

Emma Dunbar – originally from England – has 15 years of Hospitality experience in 5 star operations such as Loews Hotels & Resorts and Crowne Plaza.  Emma became the leading Training General Manager in North America for a fast casual dining restaurant chain, and helped spearhead 2 small businesses to success through business development, operations management and strong leadership.  Prior to opening Tandem Emma was the acclaimed General Manager of City Kitchen restaurant where she worked in partnership with Chef Younes to transform the City Kitchen into a thriving, successful dining and bar experience.

Community Partners

Our monthly community partnership program allows us to help local organizations fundraise and build awareness within our community.  

In addition to events held in the organizations honor, Tandem creates a unique cocktail for each partner; for each “Give Back” cocktail sold, $5 is donated.  It has proven to be an amazing program with great results, the community around us has embraced it and made it a success.

This months Give Back Cocktail, dedicated to UNC Children’s Hospital is named “The Promise” Champagne, regans orange bitters, elderflower, orange liqueur, vodka, citrus.

We also try to source the majority of our product from local farms, at times this is not always possible with the level of volume, demand and supply but here are the local sources that we love and support.

Catering and Events

Tandem is perfectly suited to host a wide variety of private functions with four separate defined spaces that are flexible to the needs of our guests. We also offer Offsite Catering and Full Banquet Services in any location, from a drop-off lunch catering to a wedding for 500.

Tandem is designed with the guest in mind and focuses on modern American cuisines with traditional international influence. Using bold flavors elegantly crafted with an emphasis on quality, Tandem believes in creating memories by offering exquisite food delivered by hospitality driven staff.  With a detail-orientated events and catering coordinator on hand at all times, you are given expert advice allowing your special event to be tailored to exactly what you desire, at a price you can afford.

Our intimate WINE ROOM offers a private experience with full service AV including drop down screen, projector and surround sound music. Perfect for class room style or dinner and a presentation. The Wine Room seats 36 people for a sit down meal and 45 people for cocktails and appetizers. The BACK ROOM seats 90 people for dinner and 150 in a cocktail setting.

The CHEF’S TABLE is the pinnacle point in the restaurant offering the perfect view of kitchen theatre combined with the sophistication of an elegant farmhouse style table, plush seating and beautiful lighting.

The PATIO is host to a lively fun outdoor space that is ideal for cocktail receptions, corporate get-togethers, parties under the stars and dining alfresco. The Patio is adjacent to the main bar area and can accommodate approximately 55 people fully seated and 100 people in a cocktail setting.

TANDEM BAR immediately greets you with its warm, unique industrial structure. The space can accommodate large groups, office parties, receptions and after hour drinks. With a large selection of local North Carolina draft beers, a progressive wine list and cutting edge mixology Tandem Bar can be the gathering point or the welcoming casual backdrop to your next event.

Tandem can also be hired out as a FULL VENUE for larger events such as weddings, holiday parties and sorority/fraternity events. Full capacity is approximately 250 people fully seated or 350 people in a cocktail setting. It is the perfect venue for such fun-filled get-togethers or formal events.
